Find the queries your pages share

How it works

  1. Export from Search ConsoleOne page or one query at a time from the Performance report, or a CSV with a query and a page on every row.
  2. Drop the files hereZIP or CSV, up to 20 MB each. Several files are joined, and nothing leaves your browser.
  3. Read the findingsEach query with the pages that compete for it and the evidence, then download them as a CSV.

The file is made on your device and lists every finding in full.

Each finding is a candidate to read, not a verdict. Open the pages and check what they are for before you change anything.

What keyword cannibalization is

Keyword cannibalization is two or more pages of one site competing for the same search query. The impressions and clicks one page could collect are split between them, and which page appears can change from one day to the next.

It is not always a problem. A product page and a guide that answers a question about the product can both appear for one query and both earn clicks. It becomes a problem when the pages are interchangeable, when a page and its own duplicate share the query, or when the split leaves both pages lower than one stronger page would be.

How the finder reads your export

It runs the same steps on every query in the file, in your browser, with plain arithmetic and no model.

  1. Join the rows. Rows for the same query and page are merged: clicks and impressions add up, and the position is averaged with impressions as the weight. A #fragment is dropped from every address.

  2. Check the queries. A query is checked when it has at least 100 impressions across all its pages.

  3. Find the competing pages. A page competes when it has at least 20 impressions and 10% of the query’s impressions, or at least 3 clicks and 10% of its clicks. A query with 2 or more competing pages is a finding.

  4. Add the evidence. Clicks Split, Positions Close and Same Path, Different Form are shown where they hold. There is no score: the numbers are the evidence.

How to export from Search Console

The Performance report lists queries and pages separately, so a query-by-page view needs one of these.

  1. One page at a time. In the Performance report, add a Page filter set to Exact URL, open Export and choose Download CSV. The ZIP lists the queries that page appears for. Repeat for each page you want to compare and drop the files together.

  2. One query at a time. Add a Query filter set to Exact query and export. The ZIP lists the pages that appear for that query.

  3. A CSV with both columns. A Looker Studio table, the Search Console API or the BigQuery bulk export can give a query and a page on every row, for the whole site at once. Column names such as query, page, clicks, impressions and position are recognised.

What the finder cannot see

It reads one export. These things decide whether a finding is worth acting on, and none of them is in the file.

What the pages are for
Two pages that serve different intents can share a query without hurting each other. Open the pages and read the query’s results before you merge or redirect anything.
Revenue
Clicks are not money. Which of two competing pages earns more depends on your analytics and orders, which an export does not hold.
Change over time
An export covers one period. A page that took over a query last month looks the same as one that has shared it for a year.
Rows beyond the cap
A table stops at 1,000 rows. On a large site, filtering by directory or exporting page by page shows more.

In the QueryRev App

The finder reads one export once. The app keeps the data connected and goes on to the decision.
