AI Citation

An AI citation is a link or named reference to a web page that an AI system gives as a source for part of its answer. It differs from a brand mention, where the answer names a company or product without pointing to a page. A citation shows which page the answer relied on and lets readers visit it.

Why it matters.

A citation does for an AI answer part of what a position does for a results page: it decides whose page a reader can click, and it shows which sources the answer drew on.

Each AI surface chooses and shows its sources in its own way. Microsoft describes assistants such as Copilot breaking pages down into smaller, structured pieces before choosing what to use[1]; Google’s AI features show supporting links to pages that are indexed and eligible for a snippet[2].

A brand can be mentioned often and cited never, which usually means other sites are describing it. Or it can be cited without being named, which means its content is useful but the brand is not the recommendation. The two call for different work, so they are counted separately.

A citation also depends on access. OpenAI says that a site that blocks OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though it can still appear as a navigational link[3]. In QueryRev’s study of the top sites, 172 of the 6,294 sites whose robots.txt could be read, 2.7%, block OAI-SearchBot by name, and 323, 5.1%, block PerplexityBot[4].

How it is measured.

Per prompt and AI surface, on each snapshot: the cited URLs, their order, and whether any belongs to your site. From these come the citation rate (the share of tracked answers that cite you), the cited pages (which of your URLs earn citations) and each competitor’s share. Where an AI surface sends referral traffic that analytics records, those visits can be counted as well; in QueryRev that report is part of AI-search tracking. Together they describe your AI search visibility.

Record the order as well. The first of three cited sources and the last are not equal, and an answer that cites you for one claim and a competitor for the recommendation shows where the gap is.

Keep the answer text with the citation. A citation for “cheapest option” and one for “best for small rooms” are both citations, but only one says what the brand wants to be known for. Reading the words beside the link is how a citation rate turns into work on a page.

Measured by

  • Citation rate
  • Cited pages
  • Competitor share

A worked example.

Sample data: an invented site, to show the method.

A shop tracks “which bed frame size fits a 60 inch mattress” on four AI surfaces. Two answers cite its sizing guide and name the brand. One names the brand as a place to buy but cites a review site. One cites the guide without naming the brand at all.

The gap to work on is the third answer: the brand is the recommendation, but a review site is the source. A comparison passage in the shop’s own guide, with sizes and prices stated plainly, gives that surface a page of the brand’s to cite.

One prompt on four AI surfaces

What to do, step by step.

  1. Fix the prompts and the AI surfaces, and snapshot each answer with its cited URLs in order.

  2. Sort each answer: cited (one of your URLs), mentioned (the brand named, no URL of yours) or absent.

  3. For each mention without a citation, find which page is cited instead, and what it states that yours does not.

  4. Check that the search crawler of each surface may read the page you want cited, and that the page is indexable.

  5. Improve the page that should be the source: the claim stated plainly, near the top, with the figures and terms people ask about.

  6. Track the citation rate per surface over several snapshots, beside the referral visits analytics records.

Mistakes to avoid.

  • Counting a mention as a citation. A brand named in an answer without a link to one of its pages is a mention. Adding the two inflates the figure and hides the work each needs.

  • Ignoring which page is cited. A citation of a thin tag page or an old post is a citation, but it sends readers to the wrong place. Track the cited URL, not only the domain.

  • Reading one answer. The sources of an answer change between runs. A citation rate over many answers is the figure; a single answer is an anecdote.

  • Taking a citation as proof of accuracy. An answer can cite your page and still describe your product wrongly. Read what the answer says about you, not only whether it links.

How QueryRev treats it.

In QueryRev’s model a Citation and a Brand Mention are separate records, each tied to the prompt, the AI surface and the answer snapshot it came from, so one is never reported as the other. A missing citation where your page holds the answer becomes an Earn Citation decision.

Questions people ask.

What is the difference between an AI citation and a backlink?

A backlink is a link on another website, fixed until someone edits that page. An AI citation is a link inside a generated answer, which can change every time the answer is written again. Both send readers to a page, but a citation has to be measured again and again.

Why do my AI citations change from day to day?

Generative answers are written again for each request, and the sources an AI system retrieves change with the wording of the prompt, the date and the index it searches. That is why citations are counted over many answers and compared between periods.

Do AI citations bring traffic?

Some do. A cited link can be clicked, and analytics records those visits as referrals where the AI surface passes them on. Many answers are read without a click, so the citation rate and the referral visits are reported side by side, never as one figure.
