AI Search Visibility
AI search visibility is how often, and how prominently, a brand and its pages appear in answers generated by AI search systems for a defined set of prompts. It combines brand mentions, citations of the brand’s pages and the accuracy of what the answers say, measured across AI surfaces and over time.

Why it matters.
Rank tracking tells you where a page stands in a list. It says nothing about whether an AI answer to the same question names you. A team that reports only positions and clicks can miss part of how buyers hear about it, or fail to notice that an answer describes its product wrongly.
Visibility alone is not the goal. An answer that mentions you and sends nobody is worth less than a citation on a buying question. It is a state to act on, not a score to admire.
Visibility starts with being read. Google’s AI features link to pages that are indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet in Search[1]. OpenAI separates OAI-SearchBot, which surfaces sites in ChatGPT’s search results, from GPTBot, which crawls content that may be used for model training[2], and Perplexity separates PerplexityBot, which surfaces and links sites in Perplexity’s search results, from Perplexity-User, which fetches a page when a person asks[3]. Each can be allowed or blocked on its own.
Answers also travel. A comparison that names three tools is read by a buyer, quoted in a team chat and asked again with a follow-up. A brand absent from the first answer is often absent from the conversation that follows, which is why visibility is tracked on the questions that start a purchase.
How it is measured.
Choose prompts that matter to the business, fix the AI surfaces, and snapshot the answers on a schedule. Report mention rate, citation rate and competitor share, split by topic and surface. Because answers vary between runs, compare periods, not single days.
State the denominator beside every share. QueryRev’s study of AI crawler access shows why: the same 896 sites are 14.2% of the sites whose robots.txt could be read, 9.0% of the whole panel and 66.9% of the sites with rules for AI crawlers[4]. A visibility rate is the same: a share of which prompts, on which surfaces, over which period.
Keep the value honest. Visits from AI surfaces that analytics records are observed; visibility that produces no click can only be modeled.
Read a sample of the answers themselves every period. Counts say how often the brand appears; the words say whether it appears as the recommendation, as an alternative or as a warning, and whether the facts are right.
Measured by
- Mention rate
- Citation rate
- Share by topic and surface
A worked example.
Sample data: an invented site, to show the method.
Sixty tracked prompts on one AI surface. The brand’s pages are cited in 47 answers, the brand is mentioned without a citation in 6, and it is absent from 7. Citation rate 78%; present in 88% of answers.
Split by topic, the gap is uneven: most of the seven answers that leave the brand out are comparison prompts, where review sites are cited instead. That is where the work starts.
What to do, step by step.
Choose prompts that matter to the business, in the words buyers use, and group them by topic and intent.
Fix the AI surfaces you track and the schedule, and keep both stable so that periods compare.
For each answer, record the mention, the citation, the cited URL, the competitors named and whether what is said about you is accurate.
Report mention rate, citation rate and competitor share by topic and surface, each with its denominator.
Check access for the gaps: may each surface’s search crawler read the pages that should be cited?
Tie visibility to outcomes: referral visits from AI surfaces where analytics records them, and the decisions taken on the gaps.
Read a sample of the answers in full each period, so the counts are checked against what the answers actually say.
Mistakes to avoid.
A single score. One visibility number hides which topics, surfaces and competitors drive it. Report the split, not only the total.
Changing the prompt set mid-period. Adding or removing prompts changes the denominator. Compare like with like, or restate the earlier period.
Counting value that was not observed. A mention that sends no visit has no measured revenue. Label its value as modeled, or leave it out of revenue reports.
Ignoring accuracy. Being named with the wrong price, or with a feature you do not offer, is visibility that hurts. Read the answers, not only the counts.
Tracking only your own brand. Without competitors in the same answers, a rate has no context. Track the brands buyers compare you with, on the same prompts and surfaces.
How QueryRev treats it.
QueryRev is not a visibility dashboard. AI search visibility is state that feeds decisions, and it is checked again after a change, next to indexing, ranking and click-through. Its value is labelled as what it is: observed where analytics sees the visit, modeled where it does not. See how it is tracked.
Questions people ask.
How many prompts should I track?
Enough to cover the topics and buying questions that matter, and few enough that someone reads the answers. A small, stable set read every week tells you more than a large set that changes each month.
Is AI search visibility a ranking?
No. AI answers have no fixed positions to rank in. Visibility is a rate: how often a brand and its pages appear in answers to a defined set of prompts, measured over time.
Can AI search visibility be measured exactly?
Not exactly, because answers change between runs and between people. It is measured as a rate over a fixed set of prompts and surfaces, read on a schedule, which makes periods comparable even though no single answer is.
